ISAC: Turning Sensing into Connectivity: A 6G ISAC LiDAR Demonstrator

The Centre for Sensor, Instrumentation and Systems Development (CD6) at UPC and Beamagine, a spin-off from the centre, present an innovative prototype developed within the European project 6G-EWOC, focused on advancing the technologies that will enable the future 6G network for intelligent and connected mobility applications.

The prototype embodies the concept of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), integrating within a single device advanced 3D+2D sensing capabilities through multimodal LiDAR together with optical wireless communication (OWC) functionalities. This enables the system not only to perceive the environment with high spatial accuracy, but also to transmit information to the infrastructure via an optical link. The result is a system capable of transforming sensing into a native network resource, merging perception and connectivity within a unified architecture and facilitating its integration into multiple applications such as intelligent and connected mobility.

This approach represents a paradigm shift towards 6G networks, where infrastructure ceases to function merely as a passive data channel and instead becomes a distributed cognitive system capable of actively locating, tracking and understanding the environment while simultaneously communicating. The ISAC LiDAR enables key use cases such as intelligent and connected mobility, cooperative robotics, space applications and smart infrastructure monitoring, optimising material resources through multitasking devices and enhancing the reliability of directional communications. As a foundational 6G technology, this convergence of sensing and communications lays the groundwork for more efficient, secure and context-aware networks, opening new opportunities for industry and smart cities.
